Ближний Восток, Европа, Сибирь.
Общая характеристика:
Стрекозы среднего размера. Начало лёта зависит от прогрева воды в водоёмах весной. Если весна тёплая и ранняя, то лёт может начинаться в середине-конце апреля, иначе - в мае. Лёт в основном заканчивается в июле, хотя отдельные особи могут встречаться и в августе.
Активны днём в солнечную погоду. Охотятся из засады, в качестве которой может служить ветка или высокая травинка. Половозрелые самцы в ожидании самок выбирают участки над водой, которые они защищают от самцов-конкурентов, нередко пытаясь прогнать с них и более крупных стрекоз.
Ночуют и пережидают пасмурную погоду в ветвях деревьев, реже - в траве.
Встречаются вблизи стоячих водоёмов, где и развиваются их личинки.
Молодые самцы и самки окрашены одинаково (грудь коричневая со светлыми полосами спереди, брюшко сверху ярко-жёлтое), с возрастом окраска темнеет и тускнеет, у самцов (иногда - частично и у старых самок) брюшко покрывается сверху голубым налётом.
У основания крыльев - коричневые пятна.
В Центральной Европе максимум численности - в конце мая - июне.
